Shane had a patio pick lined up for tonight but a 90 degree day and a threat of thunderstorms made us think otherwise. So here we are at Sammies, where we celebrated our good decision as the skies broke open in the middle of dinner and we watched it rain horizontally from the comfort of an interior dining room.
Yay for weather apps!
Sammie’s is one of those places that Shane and I have been to several times over the years for other occasions but we haven’t visited on a Wednesday night in quite some time. Although Ted seemed to remember the exact table we sat at the time we were here for a Wednesday night that included $1 domestic beers, so there’s that.
He also noted that those domestics included Labatt (from Canada) but did not include Yuelingling (from Pennsylvania). I think someone needs a lesson in geography. Or the meaning of the word domestic.
But there was no special of that kind tonight, so no worries anyway.
Instead there was Christmas Ale for Ted to celebrate Christmas in July.

And a Paloma for me that tasted as though it contained about half a bottle of tequila in that tiny rocks glass.

Shane got a Bud Light, which for whatever reason I don’t have a photo of but I’m sure you know what that looks like.
Spoiler alert: when we got our bills at the end of the night we learned that those large Bud Lights were only $1 less than my half a bottle of tequila. That was a plot twist none of us saw coming.
Ted closed his menu decisively early on, declaring that his appetizer depended on his choice of entree, so even though we only placed the app orders first he had decided on his whole meal by that point.
Overachiever.
He got the fried zucchini for his app and the maple bacon chicken sandwich for the meal with green beans as a side.

His other dinner option was going to be the salmon, with six of the wings as his app. Let’s see how well this choice works out for him.
We got the pretzels as our app.

In a true case of hindsight being 20/20, Shane discovered the additional features menu on the table after we already ordered our apps and just as we were about to place our meal order, which meant he learned too late that fried green tomatoes were an option he could’ve advocated for.
As someone who doesn’t care for that particular dish, I wasn’t sorry.
I joined Ted on the maple bacon chicken sandwich with green beans as a side bandwagon. Only mine had cheese.

Shane went way out into left field with his order this week, choosing the Dave’s Mac and cheese for his meal, with added crispy teriyaki chicken.

Wait, what’s this now … NO ONE ORDERED A BURGER OR WINGS?? Blasphemy!
Way to unceremoniously end a streak. Not that in an count offhand how many weeks we were on, but I’m sure it was impressive enough to justify how disappointed I am in us.
But at least we enjoyed our options, even if they killed a little piece of our hearts.
I thought the chicken sandwich was decent. Although it was impossible for me to eat as a sandwich – this was definitely a knife and fork situation just given the messiness. Ted managed his but I was too afraid of wearing most of it so I gave up in to the aid of silverware after just a few bites. Maybe don’t order this one of you’re wearing light colored clothing. Or pack your own bib.
Shane said the mac and cheese was good. It arrived to the table steaming as if someone just put out a fire on top of it, so given Shane’s penchant for chilled food we were surprised he finished it before the place closed.
Our server stopped over after we had finished eating and asked if we wanted desert. I said no, and then made a joke that I would be “drinking my dessert instead.” Which to me implies I might want another drink, maybe?
Nope, instead she brought us our checks. Hmmm. Mental note made that some people don’t understand subtle sarcasm.
And also, you know how much we love when we’re essentially unceremoniously given the you-don’t-have-to-go-home-but-you-can’t-stay-here treatment by uncommunicative servers who just assume the end of the dining experience means we’re ready to move on out the door.
But no worries, our early departure just gave us an excuse to stop at our old favorite – and home of the strongest mixed drinks for the cheapest price – The Windsor Pub, for a few rounds on our way home. I think we paid as much for our entire drink tab at Windsor as we did for one drink at Sammie’s. We’ll call this a win, folks.
