After a few months of inconsistent outings due to work and personal commitments and some easy and close to home revisits just because we didn’t have time to make actual plans, we were super excited to try someplace new with Ted’s pick tonight. It came recommended by a friend of his – and while that has burned us before (hello, Gus’ Chalet, our old friend) we always seem to be willing to take that chance.
Usually because it makes for a good story to keep bringing up down the road. Because nothing says friendship like continuing to harass someone about a questionable pick for an entire decade.
Anyway.
But then sometimes we walk into a place we think is new and just have this feeling that we’ve been there before.
Because we have. This place once was called Gambler’s, which we last visited in April of 2019. Good thing we have this blog so we don’t have to drive ourselves crazy trying to remember these details.
But also I guess we should’ve known there couldn’t be another good place we haven’t visited yet in Doylestown, right? The town is only so big.
I think we almost sat at the exact same table, too. I mean, may as well keep things consistent.
Ted ordered a beer, and I was leaning that way too until they didn’t have any Christmas beers on tap that I liked. So tequila and soda it is. Same for Shane.
It’s a natural pivot, I know.
Asked the server what she recommended from the menu and she said was a fan of the Nashville hot chicken that was on special. She said it used to be on the menu and now it’s just a special, which seems like maybe we should’ve asked a few more questions to get that full story but we’ll save that for another time.
After a lengthy discussion with the server Ted decided to order the perogis. He also said he can’t pass them up when they’re on the menu, which kind of makes one wonder why there needed to be such a lengthy discussion about it but we’ll just overlook that for now.
He also got 12 of the Jamaican jerk wings.
Shane tried to order the hot cheese balls – because if we can duplicate Ted’s reasoning, this is a food that Shane will order anytime they’re on the menu. But sadly we learned that they don’t carry them anymore here and just haven’t updated the menu yet. Sad face.
We got the tater bombs instead. Which I seemed to remember from our last visit, and also came highly recommended from the server.
After a disappointing lunch experience today in which a coworker ate the burger Shane ordered for himself – and Ted and I heard about it allllll the way to Doylestown (which is not a quick trip, just FYI) we thought for sure Shane would go that route and try to make up for it with a good burger. But no, he opted for six of the Shelly’s smokehouse dry rub (or something like that because he couldn’t quite remember the name when I asked and we had already had our menus removed) and six of what was supposed to be garlic parm dry rub but ended up not being a dry rub at all. So there’s that.

The Tater bombs also came out on his plate like his “side” instead of an app that we were both going to share. Um, OK. Similarly, Ted’s perogis came out on the same plate with his wings.

Meanwhile my steak Philly – because as much as us ordering wings and burgers is a constant, so is my ability to order a steak Philly at almost any place that has it on the menu – looked rather lonely on its giant plate by itself. And my house salad that I ordered as my side came out like an app.

Clearly Shane’s bad luck with food delivery today is rubbing off on all of us. Cool.
Also sides are not included with sandwiches so you do have to order separate if you want anything. Which makes it even stranger that they all came out in the same plates. But we’ll just leave that off to the side along with the Nashville hot chicken story.
Ted liked the perogis, but said the wings were not spicy enough. Shane thought his wings were ok, other than the whole expecting a dry rub as the one flavor but not getting it thing. Details.
My sandwich was good. The bread was soft and it wasn’t overly stuffed with meat or cheese so it was easy to eat. You never know with Phillies. Sometimes it’s a knife and fork experience more so than eating a true sandwich.
Overall it’s a decent pick and one we might consider coming back to more often if it were closer. Until then we’ll just wait until it changes names and then try convince ourselves we’re picking someplace new.
Picked by: Ted
