Move over Ted, there’s a new person picking the local chain places.

Truth be told I had no idea I picked this place’s sister location down in Norton a few years ago until Shane brought it up. I had to come back here to this page to look at the list and figure out where exactly it was. How can he remember those details but not which drawer the scissors have resided in for the past nearly 12 years we’ve lived in our house? Ok.

Another revelation: this Finny’s was once a place called Max’s Cabana #9. Which – aside from one of the single worst names ever – was where we encountered probably the worst service in all of our years of doing this.

Shocking that they closed, no?

Thankfully we learned early into our visit that Finny’s has made the necessary changes in that department. Our server was super nice. Ted asked about beers on tap and she didn’t just gesture to the tap list by the bar or read us off a list – she went back and brought us out their bartenders white board with all the handles listed.

Oh look – a $2 beer special! But it’s from a brewery we’ve never heard of before called Wolf Ledges and they have weird beer flavors like caramel macchiato and lavender zest. And as much as I’m all about frugality, I also want to actually enjoy what I’m drinking. So Ted and I ask the server, who got bonus points from us when she not only questioned back if we knew anything about this place but also brought us samples before letting us order a full glass. Which let’s face it really told us all we needed to know right there, but sure we’ll try the special anyway.

Yeah, so the caramel macchiato tasted like water with a touch of coffee flavor, and the lavender was more like a seltzer. No thank you. Even the samples were difficult to get down.

I opted for a Mango Cart, and Ted went with a red ale. Shane of course knew he wanted bud light from the beginning. Shocking.

Not gonna lie, part of the reason I picked this place this week was because they had a Wednesday steak special, which I know the guys always have a hard time passing up. It’s a 10oz steak with potato and veggies for $12.95.

Shane overheard the server tell another table that only had a few steaks left, so he got her to put his order in early while Ted and I were still deciding on beers so that he didn’t miss out.

He didn’t want veggies, but was told he couldn’t sub in/out anything since it was all part of a special so he asked just not to have them.

Apparently the Shane that loved his salad the other week was not having any part of tainting that memory with other vegetables tonight.

We got the pepper jack cheese bites for an app, and then I ordered six of the brown sugar bourbon dry rub wings with a side salad. Ted got six spicy garlic wings and the gyro.

And here’s where the train comes off the tracks a bit, kids.

So my wings, my salad, Ted’s wings and and Ted’s gyro all arrive at the table.

No steak for Shane, which seemed odd since he ordered before us, but we’ll give it a minute. Also no app, which typically comes out before the main meals. Hmmm.

Turns out that Ted’s wings also were put in as garlic parm when they should’ve been spicy garlic. With some people that may not be a deal breaker, but we all know how much Ted hates cheese, so that was a hard no. They took them back to fix.

About this time we learn from a new server that our original server – who disappeared at some point before the food arrived – had been in training and was only on her second day working there. Which of course totally explains why she didn’t write down any orders as we gave them to her (said in a sarcasm font).

Which, while we’re on this topic, can we just talk about how it’s really not impressing anyone if you think you can memorize my order – along with that of 2 or more people at my table – instead of just writing it down? This is not the Olympics of food service. Mo medals are given out for amazing memory. Even if you’re being green and not wanting to waste paper, I would even implore you to use the notes app on your phone. As soon as I see a server nod their head and commit my order to memory I pretty much assume something is going to come out off about it. If there was a red flag for servers, that would be the equivalent of you waving it in hurricane strength winds.

Anyway.

Thankfully another server who was taking over for the one who left realized the issues with our meals and took it upon herself to try to make it all right. They were fortunately still able to find a steak for Shane – even though supposedly they only had three left when he put his order in – or maybe they knew there was a good chance of WWIII breaking out right at that moment if he had to order something else and they sent someone down to the store to buy one. However it worked out, they at least got him what he ordered.

Well, kind of. I mean he had said fries and no vegetable but ended up with a baked potato and vegetables. Ok. At this point, the steak itself is a win so no complaints here.

Same with Ted’s wings, which returned to the table supposedly doctored but still tasting a lot like garlic parm. You know Ted was hungry by that point because he still ate them.

Hey look the app arrived at the end of the meal! This is new.

Although they were supposed to be pepper jack bites but tasted a lot more like Gouda.

Sigh.

I do have to give huge props to the second server we had, though. She brought Shane a basket of fries on the house when she heard him say that his order was wrong but at that point he was just hungry and would eat it anyway. She also comped Shane’s second beer for all the trouble. And she was the one who made sure our appetizer finally made its way to us also.

So all in all maybe not the best experience, but the friendly servers (even the first one who got everything wrong at least was kind and chatty to us) made it much better than it would’ve been. Overall not sure it’s a place we need to return to – unless it’s to see if that first server came back for another shift because it seems like maybe this wasn’t her best skillset, ha – but if we were in the area and needed a meal we might give it another shot.
