Welp, it’s Ted’s pick again, which means our quest to try every Mexican restaurant available in a 35-minute commuting radius continues.

So glad I went out with a friend to a Mexican restaurant the night before. And made tacos at home on Sunday. Clearly I forgot it was Ted’s pick this week.

So full disclosure, we have been to this actual building before to eat a meal. But the restaurant had a different name. Was it still Mexican food? Sure. But it appeared to be a different menu. I mean, as different as you can be for still serving tacos and burritos anyway.

Fortunately there are also still margaritas. Priorities.

Shane and I got the raspberry, while Ted opted for peach.

Nice little touch at this restaurant is that everyone at the table gets their own dish of salsa instead of having to share a community bowl. So if you’re a double dipper, this place is for you.

It’s also nice because everyone can add their own level of extra hot sauce if they so desire. Although that may have backfired for us because I think all of us overseasoned our individual bowls. Oops.

But you so have to share one tiny bowl of some type of Cole slaw that was delivered along with the salsa. Having learned from our experiences with trying questionable appetizers we didn’t order that just appear at our table, Ted and I avoided it – but Shane apparently had a taste for slaw and gave it a try.

Much like the first time we experienced free and unquested food on a Wednesday, it still definitely wasn’t sweet.

RIP Gus’ Chalet.

Anyway.

I spent a few minutes looking at the website on the drive over – I mean, as mentioned, I had this type of food twice already this week so I wanted to make sure there would be at least something different to try – and learned they are apparently known for street tacos.

So what the hell, let’s try those.

Now when I read that you get three tacos in your order, naturally I anticipated being able to mix and match three different kinds so you can sample a few. I mean, since it is their signature item and all.

Nope. It’s three of the same. Boring.

I chose the chicken tinga, which according to the menu was something new. It’s chicken cooked with onion and a spicy chipotle sauce. I had hoped to try the Al Pastor and the El Mexicano, but I guess that’s for another day.

I did like them. Which, I mean, is fortunate since I had three of the same.

If you can’t tell, I’m not resentful about this rule at all.

Anyway.

Sticking with the theme of threes, Shane got the triple play burrito, which is filled with steak, chicken and chorizo. And you know I’m going to mention that at least he got a variety.

It’s also topped with grilled pineapple. See, Healthy Shane is still with us this week.

Ted got the tilapia.

Wait what?

Shane: you picked a Mexican restaurant and then ordered fish? What the hell, Ted.

Maybe Shane was just upset that Ted ended up being healthier than him this time around and he couldn’t have food envy over Ted’s meal.

Ted’s reasoning was that he had looked it up online and it looked good. So there’s that.

And he ended up being happy with his choice, so it seems like that worked out.

I liked my tacos. I mean, I’m sure we’ve all caught on by now that I wished there was an opportunity to sample three different kinds instead of just getting three of the same – but I’m glad at least the one I ordered was tasty. It was spicy enough without being overwhelming – good because my mouth was a bit on fire from the unfortunate over pour on the hot sauce addition to the salsa – and definitely filling.

Shane thought his was just average. It wasn’t the best he’s ever had, but it was good enough.

In his words, it’s no Latinos. Which as we all know is the standard by which all Mexican restaurants shall now be judged. On Shanes ever changing Top (insert random number here) List of Mexican restaurants, I think that one will solidly hold the top spot for some time.

Overall though Los Girasoles is a decent pick for a meal and a few drinks. There is little by way of ambiance or entertainment, but the service is good and the place is big enough that you don’t feel like you can’t have a conversation at your table even when it’s super busy. It’s not a place you linger at, but it’s good for a quick meal.
