Thank you, Mother Nature, for this impressive array of patio weather Wednesdays we’ve enjoyed so far this summer.

In going back through our posts looking for places to complete our 2026 Summer of Patios tour, I realized we haven’t been back to Wolf Creek Tavern since September 2018.

During that visit we experienced not so stellar service, some greasy fish and chips, wings that Ted was trying to give away to the rest of the table and drinks that never seemed to be cold. So I guess it’s not really a surprise that we haven’t been back in nearly eight years, no?

But because we’re all about second chances – unless of course you close before we have an opportunity to make a revisit, like Gus’ Chalet (sorry Ted) – I thought it might be time to go back and try our luck again.

And hey, Wednesdays are now wing special nights, words that are music to our ears in this group. But it’s a little more complicated here than the usual “wings for (insert price here) each” special – at Wolf Creek Tavern they like to measure things out. Because that keeps everyone on their toes. So it’s $10 for the first pound and then $5 for each pound after that.

You know who loves doing math with their meal? People who are drinking. Good call.

You know of course we had to inquire about how many come in a pound – asking the important questions here, I know – and the server said it’s usually about 5-6 wings. Hmmm. That changed the game for the guys in terms of their order, because if you know this group then you know that five or six wings is quite often an appetizer to a whole other meal.

Case in point, Ted ordered one pound of the house hot wings “to start” and also a schnitzel sandwich.

Jason got one pound of the Sedona ranch dry rub and then also a pound of the maple mustard wings.

And Shane went big with three orders of wings – one pound each of Sedona ranch, garlic parm and maple mustard.

So yeah, as you can see from the pics, these aren’t your typical wings. They’re actual whole wings, like the kind you get in fried chicken buckets. So both the flat and the drumstick, not separate. Which is something it seems might’ve been good to share in the whole “how many do you get in a pound” conversation, but what do I know.

Needless to say, the guys were quite impressed with the size of the wings. Shane realized his error the moment they hit the table, as he could’ve just ordered two pounds total and later ended up taking a full pound home of wings with him. But hey, for $5 at least he has lunch for tomorrow.

The Sedona dry rub was the clear winner in the flavor out of all of them. Hands down.

Oh yeah, and Shane and I also got the soft pretzel for an app. Because that was clearly necessary.

I ordered the hot honey chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries.

Cassi also got the hot honey chicken sandwich but with fries. And she and Jason got the chorizo balls as an app.

I wasn’t really impressed by my sandwich. I guess I would give it a solid “just OK.” I didn’t get much of the hot honey flavor. I mean, maybe there’s more on the fried version, but I had ordered the grilled chicken – because we live in a timeline right now where lettuce is questionable, which means my options for sides were all things fried and firmly on the side of unhealthy, so I was trying to bring at least a little bit of good eating into the meal. Balance, folks.

And I guess the universe was then also trying to tell me that maybe avoiding bread was also a good idea on the path to being healthier, because I wasn’t impressed by the pretzel either. Even the doughiest parts seemed dry, and it definitely didn’t compare to pretzels we’ve ordered from other establishments in the area. Could’ve saved those calories, too. Noted.

Ted said the spicy mustard on his sandwich was spicier than his hot wings, so take that as you will. I guess the upside is that we know his taste buds aren’t broken, since something on his plate actually did have spice – but it really seems like that should’ve been the other way around as far as where that flavor was attributed, no?

Service was spotty. And it’s not like it was busy. We didn’t notice many tables occupied inside, and there were maybe two or three other tables on the patio along with us over the course of the evening. But we continuously lost our server for large periods of time, and also seemed to pick up different random people checking on us at times as well.

For example, at one point a guy came out to deliver a draft Busch light to the table, which wouldn’t be a bad thing except that Jason had actually ordered a Bud light. He was about to just drink it – because well let’s be honest it’s still a light domestic beer and we don’t want it to go to waste – but then a different server appeared with a Bud light in a bottle and tried to give it to him also.

Hmmm.

I mean, we don’t often complain about too much beer. But when it’s delivered by random people and isn’t always consistent to what’s being ordered we do get a little bit sus.

Oh look, our server basically reappeared just to politely cash us out! You all know that’s our special favorite, the good old “hey I want to go home so I’m just going to assume you’re done here and cash you out like it was your idea to leave even though even I know you were likely going to order a few more rounds and hang for a bit” move. Cool.

We ended up moving the party down the road to the Houston Pub for a round of drinks, because if we learned nothing else from this visit it’s that these two establishments are about 10 minutes away from one another and so why not. The guys truly didn’t remember us eating there a few years ago – my pick – until we turned into the parking lot and there was a collective “ooooh righhhttt.” We can say it hasn’t changed. But at least the drinks were cold and they let us stay as long as we wanted, which is sometimes all you can ask for to end a Wednesday night out.
